Soda-fired Gongfucha Cup #209
Cup, Porcelain, soda-fired (partial glaze)
A tall, narrow gongfucha cup whose wall was cut with a knife into diagonal facets after throwing. A gongfucha cup holds one short infusion from a small teapot or a gaiwan. The glaze is a pale white with a grey-beige rim, and the cup stands on a small foot ring.
In the soda firing, soda is added to the kiln at high temperature. The vapour settles on the piece, which gives the orange flashing on the unglazed parts and the uneven gloss on the glaze.
