Saemidori means "clear green", and the matcha delivers exactly that: a luminous spring-green bowl, natural sweetness and almost no astringency. Bred in Kagoshima from Yabukita and the sweet Asatsuyu, it has become the cultivar of choice for hand-picked premium matcha — when a producer picks by hand, this is the leaf they save it for.

Our Saemidori matcha comes from Nishio and from Yame, including hand-picked and honzu-shaded lots. One plant, two regions, different shading traditions — the differences in the bowl are terroir and craft, never the genetics. If you drink matcha mostly as usucha and want sweetness without edges, start here.

One note for the label-reader: Saemidori and Samidori are two different plants — the near-identical names cause constant confusion. The breeding history and full taste architecture are in our Saemidori guide. The cultivar as matcha and gyokuro side by side: the Saemidori cultivar shelf; all single-cultivar matcha here.
