Yunomi, Porcelain, soda-fired (partial glaze)

A yunomi, the Japanese everyday teacup without a handle, in a conical shape with a wide collar at the rim, which gives a good hold between the fingers. The collar is glazed in a glossy grey-blue, and the body shows grey on one side and ochre flashing on the other.

In the soda firing, soda is added to the kiln at high temperature. The vapour settles on the piece, which gives the orange flashing on the unglazed parts and the uneven gloss on the glaze.
