Cup, Porcelain, soda-fired (partial glaze)

Set of cup and saucer. The straight espresso cup has a flat, angular handle and a textured pale glaze with grey-green tones, and the saucer is glazed in grey. The unglazed base of the cup shows the orange colour of the soda firing.

In the soda firing, soda is added to the kiln at high temperature. The vapour settles on the piece, which gives the orange flashing on the unglazed parts and the uneven gloss on the glaze.
