Yunomi, Porcelain, soda-fired (partial glaze)

A large yunomi, the Japanese everyday teacup without a handle, in two tiers with a rounded lower part. The glossy grey-blue glaze covers most of the cup, and orange flashing shows at the foot.

In the soda firing, soda is added to the kiln at high temperature. The vapour settles on the piece, which gives the orange flashing on the unglazed parts and the uneven gloss on the glaze.
