Yunomi, Porcelain, soda-fired (partial glaze)

A large yunomi, the Japanese everyday teacup without a handle, in two tiers with a groove between the rounded lower part and the upper part. The upper part is grey-blue, and the lower part is covered in warm orange flashing.

In the soda firing, soda is added to the kiln at high temperature. The vapour settles on the piece, which gives the orange flashing on the unglazed parts and the uneven gloss on the glaze.
