Yunomi, Porcelain, soda-fired (partial glaze)

A large yunomi, the Japanese everyday teacup without a handle, with a flaring, trumpet-like wall. The rim is glazed in grey-blue, and the lower half shows strong orange flashing from the soda firing.

In the soda firing, soda is added to the kiln at high temperature. The vapour settles on the piece, which gives the orange flashing on the unglazed parts and the uneven gloss on the glaze.
