Faceted Soda-fired Yunomi #203
Yunomi, Porcelain, soda-fired (partial glaze)
A yunomi, the Japanese everyday teacup without a handle, whose wall was cut with a knife into irregular facets after throwing. Grey-blue glaze and orange flashing alternate across the facets, and the cup stands on a stepped foot ring.
In the soda firing, soda is added to the kiln at high temperature. The vapour settles on the piece, which gives the orange flashing on the unglazed parts and the uneven gloss on the glaze.
