Su Mingzhi 蘇铭智 is a young but very talented teapot maker from Chaozhou. He is specialised in ultra-thin Egg-Yolk-Clay teapots and classical shapes. I fell in love with his work on my last trip in Chaozhou and am very happy to offer a small selection of his models here.

Chaozhou is renowned for its fine, unglazed teapots made from local clay, deeply tied to the region’s Gongfu tea tradition. These teapots, often small and meticulously crafted, are prized for their ability to enhance tea flavors through gradual seasoning. The clay, rich in iron, retains heat exceptionally well, making it ideal for brewing aromatic oolong teas. With a history spanning centuries, Chaozhou teapots are cherished for their elegant simplicity, functional precision, and their role in the refined art of tea preparation.

Uneven,subtle glaze. The dented spots are particulary cool, since they adjust the cup very much to the hand. The combination of the white glaze with unglazed red clay parts reminds me positevly of 1970s aestetics.
We love the weight, the feel, the size - and how beautifully the katakuchi lends itself to pouring cool liquids as well as brewing hot tea...
