UNEARTHED

UNEARTHED is our own label for teaware that we design ourselves. Every piece starts from one practical problem as well as from several inspirations, gets tested as a 3D printed prototype until it pours and handles the way it should, and only then goes to the workshop, where it goes through a few more rounds before the design is final.

Why we design our own

“I have been drinking tea for more than fifteen years, making pots and teaware for more than ten, and selling high-end teaware for more than five, with several thousand pieces passing through my hands. That gives me a wide repertoire of aesthetic and functional details which I can apply to a new problem. It is less an artistic approach and more a practical one, because every design takes one single problem and solves it with its own approach in function and in form.”

About UNEARTHED (Munich, Germany)

I started designing our own pieces because the ware I could buy did not do the job well enough. Every design begins with one concrete problem, for example a spout that drips, a lid that slides off when you pour, or a bowl you cannot get the tea out of cleanly.

What I bring to it is use, not styling. Unpacking, using and shipping several thousand pieces teaches you things a drawing never will: how thick a wall has to be before it stops burning your fingers, where a spout has to be cut so it breaks the stream cleanly, and which shapes people still reach for after a month.
