Bowl, Porcelain, soda-fired (partial glaze)

A tall bowl with slightly rounded walls and a small foot ring. The upper part is glazed in a speckled grey-blue, the lower part shows orange-red flashing, and the inside carries the spiral of the throwing rings. It can be used as a large teacup or as a small bowl.

In the soda firing, soda is added to the kiln at high temperature. The vapour settles on the piece, which gives the orange flashing on the unglazed parts and the uneven gloss on the glaze.

Yufeng Wang

Wang Yufeng founded Nánjiāo Studio in 2011 to explore ceramics that reflect nature’s healing power. With over a decade of dedication to soda firing, his works radiate rustic elegance—fine porcelain forms painted by fire and earth. Each piece is a quiet conversation between artist, kiln, and nature.

Contemporary Chinese arts and crafts scene

The city of Jingdezhen is not only the porcelain capital of the world but also in recent decades became a major hub of the Chinese arts and crafts scene in general, especially with regards to teaware. This does not only concern porcelain makers but also artists working with other materials like stoneware, glas, metal, wood and textiles.
