Three matchas by Marukyu Koyamaen — one of the oldest and most respected producers in Uji, Kyoto. All three blends are made specifically for the European market and meet strict EU pesticide standards. As an authorised reseller, these are the three EU-approved blends we carry.

Soju (20g) — light and creamy, no bitterness. A reliable daily cup that also works well in drinks.

Meiju (20g) — richer and smoother, with more depth and a longer, sweeter finish.

Oju (20g) — buttery texture, concentrated umami, clean even as koicha.

The three together trace the full range of what Koyamaen does — from daily cup to ceremony.

For a thick micro-foam: 1:20 (or 1:25) at 80°C. All our matcha is freshly milled by order and stored at 2°C on arrival in Germany.

FAQ

Is UNEARTHED an authorized retailer? UNEARTHED is an "Authorized Wholesale Retailer of Marukyu Koyamaen". If you ever want to verify the authenticity of Marukyu Koyamaen products, you can contact Marukyu Koyamaen directly at info@marukyu-koyamaen.co.jp.
How do I read the best-before date on the tin? Marukyu Koyamaen prints it in the Japanese format YY.MM.DD (year.month.day). A tin marked 27.02.05 is best before 5 February 2027.
When was this Matcha milled? The milling date is around 6 months before the best-before date — the current batch was milled in late July 2026. The sealed tins are nitrogen-flushed before shipping, so the Matcha stays extremely fresh until the tin is opened.
How is the Matcha milled? All Marukyu Koyamaen Matcha is stone-milled in-house on granite mills (ishi-usu) — a single mill yields only around 40 g per hour. In our experience, their milling quality and consistency are among the best on the market — built on long experience, technology leadership, and in-house resources few other producers can match.

Uji

(Kyoto, Japan )

Uji Matcha

Uji, located near Kyoto, is renowned for its centuries-old tradition of matcha (powdered green tea) production, deeply intertwined with Japanese culture and the tea ceremony. Tea cultivation in Uji began in the early 13th century during the Kamakura period, flourishing due to the region's favorable climate and topography.
The Guardian

In the 16th century, Uji farmers developed the "Ōishita Saibai" shading technique, covering tea plants to enhance chlorophyll and amino acid content, resulting in the vibrant green color and rich umami flavor characteristic of high-quality matcha.

Uji matcha gained prominence through its association with the Japanese tea ceremony, particularly under the influence of tea master Sen no Rikyū, who emphasized simplicity and natural beauty. The region's dedication to traditional cultivation and processing methods has solidified its reputation as a premier matcha producer, with Uji matcha being highly esteemed both domestically and internationally.
