Light and Shadow

Japanese Glass Makers

We are very happy to feature four unique glass makers from Japan whose work explores the interplay of light and shadow through handcrafted glass vessels. Daisaku Hashimura (Yokohama) uses the CRACK/WCRACK technique: pieces are rapidly cooled in water to create controlled cracks, then reheated to partially remelt and mend them. Note: his pieces are not suitable for hot water — please use lukewarm to cold water only. Miki Inoue (Toyama/Kanazawa): "The first time I lay eyes on one of Inoue-san's Katakuchi I was deeply moved by its simple yet elegant shape: soft curves, voluptuous yet reduced and of course highly functional in use. The polished bottom seems like a clear lens revealing a glimpse on the material below." Heat-resistant to approx. 85°C. Daigo Kikuchi (Toyama): "Despite being rather young Daigo-san created a very unique and distinctive style: The hint of pink in his glassware creates a soft and nostalgic touch. The thin walls make his pieces feel light and refined. The marks of making glow like filaments when reflecting the light." Heat-resistant to approx. 85°C. Torimoto Glass Studio (Kyoto): Completely heat resistant — suitable for pouring boiling water inside. Inspired by the life in the mountains of Kyoto, the elongated glass pieces are functional and ideal for daily use.
