French Japanophilia or Japonisme is particularly visible in the contemporary ceramics scene in France today. The fascination with Japanese aesthetics and concepts such as wabi-sabi is reflected in a strong appreciation of the Japanese Tea Bowl. The Chawan (jap. for "tea bowl") is the centrepiece of the Japanese Tea Ceremony, its the vessel which holds the green frothy Matcha, an object of admiration and appreciation. Despite it’s esteemed status a Chawan at heart is just a bowl. We are featuring 8 unique french perspectives on the Chawan, which are all utilising different styles, techniques and materials.
