Mathieu Casseau is based in Bretagne (Douarnenez) and uses Terra Sigillata as his primary mode of creation. Terra Sigillata is a technique of ancient Roman origin.

Mathieu utilizes refined iron-bearing natural clay slips to finish his perfectly thrown bowls. In the wood-firing and subsequent smoke-reduction-firing those slips create intense colours as well as beautiful naturalistic black micro-cracks and discolourations.

The combination of his refined and symmetric throwing style with the wildness of smoke fired terra sigillata creates a unique contrasting balance and beauty.
