Eric’s artistic approach
Each of my ceramics, turned then finely sculpted, modeled, or textured in porcelain, is shaped without constraint or limit. I seek to valorize what one might qualify as a "flaw," thereby producing a playful interpretation of the piece, a uniqueness inherent to its conception, and a sense of incompleteness and fragility. I also consider the "scraps" from shaping that I use to embellish subsequent pieces.
My primary source of inspiration is, above all, light. I familiarized myself with it in my former profession through photography. I continue to incorporate it into my ceramic work.
Free from decoration, the surfaces of my pieces are nonetheless painterly. They catch the light. Sometimes glazed, sometimes raw, between shadow and light, they reveal unsuspected nuances of white and translucency provided by porcelain.
My ceramics always possess a diverted utility. I do not oppose utility to expression. Both are in harmony. A bowl is useful, but its singularity speaks volumes about the potter's intention. The bowl, or chawan, holds a privileged place in my work. It is the starting point of my creations, the source of inspiration. It allows me to explore, experiment, and continually push the possibilities of porcelain. Shaping is primarily about gestures imprinted in the material, a testament to our intention.
It is in this ongoing dialogue between material and gesture that I seek emotion.
