The rich golds and reds of this “Katmandu” fabric by Marvic Textiles contrasts with the deep greed glaze of this Shōraku chaire. The paisley pattern is carefully cut and pattern matched by Kyle to flow down the front of the shifuku. The rich burgundy lining features a textured check pattern around the upper edge while the himo is braided in a rich red and gold flecked spiral pattern.

In this exhibition, Kyle explores the idea of the silk road and how textiles move around the world, often changing meaning as they do. Here the name “Katmandu” references the silk road whilst the paisley pattern represents how textiles are interpreted differently around the world. Originating in India, in the UK it is often seen as rather exotic, yet traditional and would originally have been a very Indian pattern. However in Japan, it is often see as a very English pattern. Illustrating how textiles move and are re-interpreted around the world. The check pattern in the lining is known as ishidatami or pavement pattern in Japan, again reminding us of textiles traveling.

All shifuku feature bespoke handmade himo and tsugari (gathering cord that attaches the himo) in pure silk by Kyle and are signed with the Studio Shifuku mark inside. All linings are silk.
