Macclesfield is the historic silk town in England. In the 1960’s they produced a series of woven silk pictures featuring scenes from around the town. The scene on this picture is of “Goswoth Old Hall”, a 15th century manor house near Macclesfield. The picture itself was woven in 1963 and this date is included on the base of the shifuku. The paired fabric is an antique wool paisley and the himo in sky blue continues the sky from the picture.
In this exhibition, Kyle explores the idea of the silk road and how textiles move around the world, often changing meaning as they do. Together these two textiles reference the way that many textiles of the silk road found there way into English country houses which in many ways became repositories for collections of textiles over time.
All shifuku feature bespoke handmade himo and tsugari (gathering cord that attaches the himo) in pure silk by Kyle and are signed with the Studio Shifuku mark inside. All linings are silk.
