This shifuku is one of Kyle’s special double layer shifuku where he places a semi transparent layer of fabric over another, giving texture an effect. He first used this technique for another Kyoshitsu chaire in 2023. With this piece a golden silk gauze has been purposefully folded and creased before being layered over a scene from “La Chasse” (the hunt), a toile de jouy by Marvic textiles. The semi transparent silk gauze elements the cotton toile de jouy as well as subtly changing the colour of the print. Together the colours and textures reflect the glaze and facets of the Kyoshitsu chaire. The himo is subtly flecked with a dark green, picking up elements of the glaze through and the fabric.
In this exhibition, Kyle explores the idea of the silk road and how textiles move around the world, often changing meaning as they do. He chose this scene with the donkey to reflect the travel of textiles along the silk road.
All shifuku feature bespoke handmade himo and tsugari (gathering cord that attaches the himo) in pure silk by Kyle and are signed with the Studio Shifuku mark inside. All linings are silk.
